Stick furniture has been around since man has wanted to sit
down. China paintings from 1000 years ago show rustic stick chairs being used as
furniture. There are many types of pieces, including stick, log, and bentwood.
The bentwood chair can be traced back primarily to Europe. Settlers brought this
design with them when they immigrated to North America.
Dan Vickers
I got the bite seven years ago when I nailed a doll sized hoop chair together.
Since then I've gone to mortise and tendon and scour birch firewood cutting
areas for the branches those "loggers" leave behind. Discarded pallets, rocks,
barn-boards, driftwood, bird and bee nests, pretty much anything goes for
materials. Dan

Producing distinctive rustic furniture and woodcraft ...
Karl Krause
Unique, Handcrafted and Dynamic Furniture
Since
1992, Karl has been making furniture, working hard at his craft
saying that it is important that his work succeeds on a number
of different levels such as having an aesthetic/artistic
quality, being functional in combination with strength, and
having technical merit.
He credits his wife as an essential part of the
business saying, “she brings wonderful female perspective to
things as well as playing devil's advocate - sometimes I am too
close to the process so she'll come along and point out things I
am not really aware of. She shows me furniture and art from
Japan - bringing Japanese sensibilities to the design.”

I have had a love of the outdoors right from when I was a kid,
married with 2 kids who also love the outdoors, makes feel lucky to
share with them. I feel I grow as an artist with each piece I make,
when I build I feel like I have found my calling. I have always been
envious of people who are artists as I never felt I had it in me no
matter how hard I tried. I worked in a sawmill for 23 years, since
I was seventeen. Very few times did I ever feel that I could look
back at the end of days work and say I did that, job well done.

Branching Out Artistree creates unique handcrafted furnishings which are
inspired by nature. The natural form of branches and the beauty of wood slabs
combine to make functional art. As founder of Branching Out Artistree, I have
been working with wood for 19 odd years & until recently I was making
traditional square furnishings. I love the outdoors, and on my many walks I was
inspired to find a way to recycle the many fallen branches that littered the
ground.

John Melo
We are devoted to producing functional, rustic
objects imbedded with artistic merit and technical integrity.
Our furniture captures the essence of the tree
by allowing its shape, line and texture to shine through in a finished piece.

Artist's Statement
I like my work to remember that it comes from the trees, for
example to see the branches that form the forest on the back of a chair. I want
the viewer to be asking themselves: Is this a chair being a tree, Or a tree
being a chair? I strive to keep the work organic in nature, so that you are
always aware of where the materials came from.
